collecting boxing memorabilia

A sports memorabilia article Collectible Boxing Memorabilia Boxing has now become one of the most popular features of sports memorabilia; in demand are hand signed photos, posters, prints programmes, boxing gloves, rare autographs and all ringside material. To familiarise the reader, I have outlined below some of the important factors when collecting boxing memorabilia, to bear in mind when starting your collection. The origins of boxing The Greeks originally introduced an ancient form of boxing into their Olympic games around 688 BC, although the sport only began to thrive years later in Roman times. Boxers in those days, or to be more accurate pugilists did not have access to gloves, head gear and other protective equipment as todays boxers do, the hand covering worn in those days consisted of leather hand straps later to be replaced with the boxing glove. Boxing only began to become accepted in England in the 18th century when wagering on what was known as a working man’s sport was rife throughout the land. In the 1800th century prize fighting was prevalent there were no written rules, formal ring, weight divisions, timed round structure, or referee, this version of the sport was both a dangerous and uncontrolled activity where deaths sometimes occurred and it was not unusual for riots to break out. As a result of a bout where he had killed his opponent in 1741 Jack Broughton introduced a more formalised structure which in1743 became known as the -Broughton’s rules-. Mufflers were used for the first time these were supposed to provide some respite for the competing pugilists. In 1788 the Prince of Wales was recorded as being present at a bout held at Smitham Bottom, Croydon, between William Futrell and gentleman John Jackson So far I have been unable to find any authentic boxing collectibles from this era. London Pride ring rules were introduced in 1838 these were based on those drafted by Jack Broughton nearly a hundred years previously. In 1865 the eighth Marquees of Queensbury John Sholto Douglas who is regarded as the patron saint of boxing drew up a new set of rules which became the sport as we know it today, some of the most significant changes included three-minute rounds, ring structure, no shoes or boots with springs and the regulated use of approved boxing gloves which must be fair sized, best quality and new. Boxing memorabilia from this era is especially popular with collectors The first world heavyweight champion under the Queensberry rules was Gentleman Jim Corbett, who defeated John L. Sullivan in New Orleans in 1892. In 1904 boxing was included in the St Louis Olympic games this created a tremendous surge of worldwide interest in the sport. The National Boxing association became the first authorative organisation to govern over the sport in 1927. Fighters were ranked and matches programmed between champions and the most deserving challengers. There are currently three recognised sanctioning bodies the WBC, IBF and WBA who are the only organisations whose boxing titles are formally recognised throughout the world. Today boxing is divided into two divisions amateur and professional the former which is found mainly in schools, the forces, universities and the Olympics. The latter which is televised worldwide and still attracts a healthy interest from the many enthusiasts eager to wager on the outcome. Collectable sports memorabilia is a fast growing hobby/business with sale houses such as Bonham’s in London and Knights Sporting Auctions in Norwich holding sales on a regular basis. Sports Collectors are always interested in posters, programmes, prints, photographs, magazines, gloves and attire, many which are signed by boxing legends are highly sought after. Examples of collectable boxers are shown below. Jake La Motta, Joe Frazier, Joe Louis, Gene Tunney, Georges Carpentier, Sugar Ray Robinson, Rocky Marciano, Floyd Patterson , Muhammad Ali. George Foreman, Mike Tyson, Sir Henry Cooper , Ricky Hatton, Roberto Duran to name but a few of the iconic heroes. I hope this brief article gives you an introduction into the pleasure of collecting and enjoying boxing memorabilia. Written by: Selby cricketcollectables.net

Steps To Choose A Great Boxing Fitness Plan

So you want a boxing fitness plan? Well, you’ve come to the right place. Many of us live in small cities or too far from the nearest fitness boxing gym. In some cities, you won’t find a class to attend. How can you develop your own boxing fitness plan that suits your needs? So today, I’m going to give you the straight dope on developing a boxing fitness plan for yourself that’ll suit your training needs. This way, you won’t have to depend on a boxing fitness class or gym to get unparalleled fitness results. So what are these 5 steps…

1. Get out a piece of paper.

In this article, I’m going to share secrets for developing a boxing fitness plan that’ll suit your needs. So get a piece of paper and split it into 5 different sections. In each section, you’ll fill in a boxing fitness exercise that you’ll enjoy and will help you reach your fitness goals. You’ll take these 5 exercises and put them together in an explosive 30 minute routine. In box #1, put down stretches. Stretch your legs, shoulders, triceps, back, and shoulders.

2. Warm-up

A warm-up is key to bloodflow and preventing injury. Did you know that warm-ups have also been proven in various studies to increase strength? In box #2, put down warm-up. Choose from the following:

a) Hitting a speed bag for 3-5 minutes
b) 25 jumping jacks
c) Pushups – 3 sets of 20

2. Do you want strength?

If you’re boxing for fitness strength, you’ll want to incorporate boxing weightlifting exercises into your routine. Here’s an example: Do 5 sets of 5 squats, deadlifts, and lunges. These exercises will work your entire-body and most importantly, your core strength. For max results, do a tri-set. So 1 set is 5 squats, 5 deadlifts, and 5 lunges done back-to-back. If you’re not into weightlifting or gaining massive size, do hindu pushups. These are absolutely awesome. In box #3, put down boxing weightlifting or hindu pushups. Note that even if you can bench 400-pounds, you’ll find hindu pushups a challenge.

4. Do you want endurance?

For ultimate endurance, you’ll want to incorporate your choice of the following routines in box #4:

a) Wind sprints – 6 to 20 sets of 50 to 100 yards
b) Max incline sprints on a treadmill – great for leg endurance and strength
c) Jump-rope fitness – 3 explosive sets of 1 minute each

5. Total body fitness

Boxing fitness is just insanely awesome because it works out your whole-body. In box #5 put down your choice of these ultimate whole-body fitness boxing exercises:

a) Burpees – 3 sets of 20
b) Shadow boxing *highly recommended* – 3 sets for 3 minutes each
c) Heavy bag training (if you have one) – 3 sets for 3 minutes each

With shadow boxing and heavy bag training, move your legs a lot. Bouce around on your feet and “dance” – like Muhammad Ali. Use jabs, uppercuts and a lot of hooks. Get explosive – throw jabs for 10 seconds. Stop. Bounce around on your feet for 20 seconds. Throw some hooks. Bounce around, uppercut, bounce around, duck. This way, you’ll incorporate the all-mighty interval training into your workout.

Between each box of exercises, take a 1 minute break. Drink water and just relax. Do exactly what boxers do after a round – sit and rest. Boxing fitness with this plan will take your fitness levels to the stratosphere. I noticed significant results in my own training after doing this for 2 weeks when I first started.

Total time: 25 – 35 minutes. Get as explosive as you can with these boxing fitness workouts to get results in lightening fast time. An awesome boxer to watch for explosivity is the crazy fit boxer Manny Pacquiao.

Why boxing is so good for women’s fitness

Boxing is one of the ultimate ways to get real fitness. It is hard, exhausting and very tough on the body. In a typical boxing workout you will work every single muscle in your body to the maximum which leaves you feeling sore, tired and like you wish you hadnt gone. However, after a week or two you will see some amazing physical changes to your body. You will be leaner, more toned and much stronger. With the proper training and management, boxing can be a safe, effective form of exercise for women.

Because boxing works on the development of so many different areas of the body, women are now replacing exercise classes such as yoga, tae boo and spinning for lessons in the ring. Boxing works on speed and agility, strengthens the cardiovascular system, helps with the fitness of the heart, and even promotes mental awareness and strength. As with an exercise it is important that you first warm up. Jumping rope for ten minutes should get your heart pumping. Don’t try to look professional this first go round! You’ll hang of it soon enough. After you warm up, you should learn the basics of boxing and the proper technique and form so that you get the most out of your workout. A trainer is the best way to learn the proper techniques of boxing, however there are various instructional DVDs on using boxing as a form of fitness.

After your work out you should cool down for three minutes. This cool down process can include shadow boxing, preferably in front of a mirror, to work on your form. A few boxing workouts will leave you with an improved for and technique as well an improved state of health and confidence. Skipping or jumping rope uses your whole body. You will notice that after your first few sessions your back, shoulders and calf muscles will be burning. Secondly, you can alter the pace of the rope jumping workout so that you can either focus on fitness or on duration so that you can burn fatter. A good way to increase the intensity is to do double jumps whereby the rope passes under your feet twice on one jump. Thus one can be benefited through this Boxing exercise.

Time Boxing An Effective Time Management Technique

When you go about your day, you’d often give yourself a -to do- list for the things you want to do during your work day. It’s easy to think about your tasks and tell yourself to do each one until they’re all done. But realistically, this often isn’t the case. You might end up spending too much time on one task that you end up wasting the rest of the day not able to finish everything on your -to do- list. Here’s where a technique called time boxing can help you manage your time better.

This technique will help you see your workday in terms of hours and minutes. Instead of doing tasks and allowing yourself to spend an uncertain amount of time on the tasks, you will need to do the tasks within a set amount of time. Let’s say you need to do an article about global warming, set a minimum and maximum time for the tasks involved in writing the article. You can probably set a minimum of 30 minutes for research, then another 30 minutes for the draft, a maximum of an hour for the article itself, and 30 minutes for proofing and editing. Start doing each task and focus on each within the stretch of time that you have set. And when you reach the end of the time, you need to stop and drop the task. You’ll end up with a task that is time-pressured and you get to finish the task within the set time, with more time to spare for a break or for other tasks.

Time boxing also helps you see and predict the amount of time you will need to spend on each of your tasks. You can assess yourself and set the time for each task according to your capabilities. You need to do this before you actually start your work day. And once you are able to, you end up with a -to do- list that also includes the minutes or hours you have set up to spend on each task. You end up with your time being managed well.

And since you spend time analyzing your tasks and figuring out which one needs more time than the others, you are able to prioritize your tasks and dedicate more time on the important tasks, without disregarding the less important ones. Time boxing is a sure way to help you organize and manage your time better.

How To Get The Most Out Of Boxing Combinations

Using boxing combinations allows you to throw multiple punches at your opponent without breaking stride. Your opponent may be able to avoid individual punches, but he will find it harder to get away from several. If you keep him busy defending your punches, he will have less time to respond with his own. Of course, if you fail to properly recover after delivering a series of blows, his return strikes will catch you with your guard down. Any advantage that you gained by using a combination may then be lost. So dont forget to put up your own guard once youve completed a combination.

Combinations may be only a couple of punches put together. They may also be five or six punches in a row. The important thing for a combination is that it has to flow. Each punch must transition smoothly to the next. Otherwise, combinations are useless. Any pause or awkward delivery gives your opponent an opportunity to recover and strike back. Of course, its not necessary to hit your opponent with every punch in a combination. Some of the punches are used to adjust your opponents defense and create an opening for the next punch. You may be trying to hit your opponents face so that he will put his hands up, leaving his torso wide open for the more powerful blow that you plan to land there. Or you may aim low to bring his hands down and follow with a strike at his head.

If youre just learning how to throw punches correctly, its best not to try creating combinations. Its more important for you to be able to execute each punch effectively in the beginning. You also have to learn the numbers that are associated with individual punches. A trainer may give you direction for a combination using only numbers. If you dont know them, your sparring partner can take the opportunity to hit while youre confused. Once you are comfortable with the punches and their numbers, begin adding combinations to your training. Dont exceed more than three new combinations a week. You will have to perform drills with each combination to keep up your skill level. Once you are ready to move onto the next set of combinations, you still have to practice the ones that youve already learned. They will help you the most when you are able to deliver them flawlessly without stopping to think. Boxing combinations are a powerful technique to have in your skill collection.

Understanding Boxing Belts

Perhaps aside from professional wrestling, the sport of boxing has given us the biggest belts ever though these are not the types that we can fashionably wear everyday. Moreover boxing belts are not the ones that can be obtained so easily because they are not sold just in any malls or department stores.

For boxers, particularly the professionals will have to work and train so very hard before they can win any of the boxing belts given by the four prestigious boxing organizations of the world. In other words, they have to earn anyone of them with their sweat and blood both literally and figuratively.

In boxing, the four distinguished authorities in this sport are World Boxing Organization (WBO), World Boxing Council (WBC), World Boxing Association (WBA), and the International Boxing Federation. Each of these organization awards boxing belts to the champions of the different boxing weight classes. It is the foremost obsession among professional boxers; regardless of which weight class they belong to wear all the four priceless boxing belts around their waist.

In 2006, the WBO has technically awarded 18 boxing belts to different weight classes including that of the famous Oscar de la Hoya. One of the 18 belts is still in question which was awarded to Omar Nio Romero of Mexico in November. Because of the drug-test result, which showed that Romero was taking steroids prior to the actual fight, thus he was stripped off the belt. Right now, WBO belt for the light flyweight division is still to be awarded to whoever wins between the first two contending boxers.

For the WBA’s part it has given away last year a total of eleven championship boxing belts, 8 boxing belts are to be defended while 2 boxing titles are still vacant. These two boxing belts are for the super middleweight and light flyweight divisions. Interestingly WBA has it own list of boxers who are recognized as super boxing belt winners.

Topping the list among the heavyweight champs are Joe Louis and Muhammad Ali, Evander Holyfield for the cruiserweight. Archie Moore and Virgil Hill topped the light heavyweight, while in the super middleweight Sugar Ray Leonard was the lone recipient. For the middleweight boxers Carlos Monzon and Thomas Hearns shared the honor while Sugar Ray Robinson was the only contender for the welterweight.

In other weight classes Antonio Cervantes and Kid Pambele tied for the junior welterweight, in the lightweight Roberto Duran was the lone awardee. Gabriel -Flash Elorde, Sandy Sadler, and Wilfredo Gomez were awarded championships for the junior lightweight, featherweight and junior featherweight respectively. The remaining holders of the super boxing belts were Kaosay Galaxy for junior bantamweight, Pascual Perez for flyweight, Yoko Gushiken for junior flyweight, and finally Leo Gamez for the lightest weight class of all the minimum weight.

Earning these belts is not really very easy. It can already be understood why boxers don’t just give these belts so easily to their challengers.
